Often, we get asked ~ “What should be in my first aid kit?” “Does my job, or industry require that I be CPR and First Aid certified?” These two questions can be difficult to quickly answer, and truly require asking more questions. But here is some information to help.
Within the OSHA First Aid Standard (29 CFR 1910.151) it requires that employees, staff, and alike, are required to be trained first-aid providers at ALL workplaces no matter the size, if there is no “infirmary, clinic, or hospital in the near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment
of all injured employees.” There are several industry specific businesses who are required to have the certification. However, because of the nature of some industries, other governmental agencies and or licensure boards, others may require the training.
As for the question of “What should be in my first aid kit”, OSHA published a Best Practices Guide:Fundamentals of a Workplace First-Aid Program. It states, “It is advisable for the employer to give a specific person the responsibility for choosing the types and amounts of first-aid supplies and for maintaining these supplies. The supplies must be adequate, should reflect the kinds of injuries that occur, and must be stored in an area where they are readily available for emergency access. An automated external defibrillator (AED) should be considered when selecting first-aid supplies and equipment.” Check out the document, as it give a great overview of the standard.
So now that you are thinking about getting your staff CPR and First Aid trained, maybe that you need a first-aid kit, or want to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the question that might come to mind is, “Where do I go to get that?” That answer is easy.
